Sorcerer FAQ
What are the main Sorcerer class features?
The 2014 Sorcerer's main features are Spellcasting, a Sorcerous Origin, Font of Magic, Flexible Casting, Metamagic, additional Metamagic choices at higher levels, and Sorcerous Restoration. Spellcasting supplies the full-caster progression, Sorcery Points fuel the class's resource system, and Metamagic allows the Sorcerer to modify spells in unique ways.
The 2014 Sorcerer has a relatively simple class progression on paper. Most of the depth comes from the interaction between spells known, Sorcery Points, Metamagic, and the Sorcerous Origin.
1st level: Spellcasting
Sorcerers are Charisma-based full spellcasters.
They gain cantrips and spell slots from 1st level and eventually reach 9th-level spell slots.
The class knows a limited number of Sorcerer spells.
Those spells can be replaced in limited ways when gaining Sorcerer levels according to the 2014 class rule.
Spell selection is therefore one of the most important long-term decisions.
1st level: Sorcerous Origin
The Sorcerer chooses an Origin at 1st level.
Origin features arrive at:
1st 6th 14th 18th
The Origin determines the magical source and adds a major mechanical identity.
2nd level: Font of Magic
Font of Magic provides Sorcery Points.
The Sorcerer has a number of points equal to Sorcerer level.
All spent points return after a long rest.
Sorcery Points fuel Metamagic and Flexible Casting.
2nd level: Flexible Casting
Flexible Casting allows conversion between spell slots and Sorcery Points.
Creating a spell slot costs a number of points based on the slot's level.
Converting a spell slot into Sorcery Points grants points equal to the slot's level.
Created slots have restrictions described by the feature and do not survive indefinitely beyond the resource cycle.
The conversion is useful because it lets the Sorcerer reshape resources to match the current need.
3rd level: Metamagic
At 3rd level, the Sorcerer chooses two Metamagic options.
Each option modifies spellcasting in a specific way and generally costs Sorcery Points.
Common 2014 examples include:
- Careful Spell;
- Distant Spell;
- Empowered Spell;
- Extended Spell;
- Heightened Spell;
- Quickened Spell;
- Subtle Spell;
- Twinned Spell.
Later pre-2024 rules may add more options where the campaign uses them.
Additional Metamagic choices
The Sorcerer gains another Metamagic option at 10th level and another at 17th level.
The class does not learn every option automatically.
Choice remains part of build identity.
Sorcerous Origin features
Origin features arrive throughout the progression.
They may change durability, spell selection, damage, movement, resource use, or other magical capabilities.
Because these features are subclass-specific, the Origin is a major source of variation between Sorcerers.
20th level: Sorcerous Restoration
At 20th level, Sorcerous Restoration returns a small number of Sorcery Points after a short rest.
It does not create unlimited Sorcery Points.
It improves high-level resource recovery during an adventuring day.
How the features work together
Spellcasting provides the magical effects.
Spells known define the toolkit.
Font of Magic supplies Sorcery Points.
Flexible Casting reshapes slots and points.
Metamagic changes how spells function.
The Sorcerous Origin adds another specialised layer.
The Sorcerer is therefore defined less by the number of different spells available and more by how effectively the chosen spells can be manipulated.
