How do you play a Sorcerer?

Prioritise Charisma

Charisma is normally the Sorcerer's highest ability score.

It determines:

• spell attack modifier;
• spell save DC.

It also supports social skills such as Persuasion, Deception, Intimidation, and Performance.

Constitution and Dexterity are common secondary priorities.

Constitution helps with hit points and concentration.

Dexterity helps Armor Class and initiative.

Choose spells for jobs, not only damage types

A limited spells-known class should avoid filling every selection with minor variations of the same function.

Try to cover different jobs:

• reliable damage;
• area control;
• defense;
• mobility;
• concentration;
• non-concentration actions;
• utility;
• social or exploration magic.

The exact balance depends on the campaign and Origin.

Match Metamagic to the spell list

Metamagic is strongest when the chosen spells actually support it.

Twinned Spell rewards appropriate single-target spells.

Subtle Spell is valuable for social, stealth, or anti-counterspell contexts where components matter.

Quickened Spell changes action economy but still has to follow the normal bonus-action spellcasting rules.

Heightened Spell is expensive but can make one important saving throw much less reliable for the target.

Do not select Metamagic first and then discover that very few known spells interact well with it.

Protect concentration

Sorcerers have Constitution saving throw proficiency, which is excellent for concentration.

That does not make concentration automatic.

Positioning, cover, defensive spells, and Constitution still matter.

Because many strong control or buff spells require concentration, protecting one active spell can be more valuable than chasing another damage spell.

Manage Sorcery Points

Sorcery Points fuel Metamagic and Flexible Casting.

A Sorcerer that spends every point immediately may lose access to the class's defining mechanics later.

A Sorcerer that never spends points wastes the feature.

Use Sorcery Points when they materially improve:

• action economy;
• number of targets;
• reliability;
• concealment of casting;
• range;
• another key spell property.

Use Flexible Casting when the conversion solves a real problem

Flexible Casting allows spell slots to become Sorcery Points and Sorcery Points to become spell slots.

This is useful when the character has the wrong resource mix.

For example, a Sorcerer may sacrifice a slot to gain enough Sorcery Points for an important Metamagic use.

Or several points may become a needed lower-level slot.

The conversion costs mean this is not free resource generation.

It is resource reshaping.

Let the Origin influence tactics

Draconic Bloodline improves durability and reinforces elemental damage themes.

Wild Magic adds unpredictable surges and Tides of Chaos.

Divine Soul dramatically expands spell-selection possibilities by adding Cleric spells.

Shadow Magic adds darkness and survival tools.

Storm Sorcery rewards movement around spellcasting.

Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul provide expanded subclass spell packages and powerful thematic systems.

Lunar Sorcery adds phase-based spell and resource choices.

Common mistakes

Common Sorcerer mistakes include:

• selecting too many spells that perform the same job;
• choosing Metamagic that does not fit known spells;
• spending all Sorcery Points immediately;
• converting resources inefficiently without a reason;
• forgetting concentration despite Constitution save proficiency;
• treating Quickened Spell as permission to ignore normal bonus-action spell restrictions;
• expecting to have the daily breadth of a prepared Wizard.

A strong Sorcerer does fewer different things than a Wizard but can do selected things in unusually powerful ways.
