Illrigger FAQ
How do you play an Illrigger?
Play an Illrigger by choosing a coherent weapon plan, keeping Charisma strong, and treating seals as a tactical resource. Place Baleful Interdict on priority enemies, burn seals when the damage or Boon trigger matters, and preserve seals when a Contract or Interdict Boon may need them for a stronger effect. Your Diabolic Contract determines whether the character leans toward magic, manipulation, durability, blood-fuelled combat, or assassination.
Playing an Illrigger well is mainly resource management around seals. The class has good martial fundamentals, but its real depth comes from deciding where seals go and how they are spent.
Establish the weapon plan
Choose Strength or Dexterity according to weapons and Combat Mastery.
Some Combat Mastery options can alter the normal ability requirements, including allowing Charisma to carry more of the weapon build.
Do not spread ability scores between Strength, Dexterity, and Charisma without knowing which mechanics actually need each score.
Keep Charisma relevant
Charisma powers the Interdict save DC and many subclass abilities.
Even a weapon-first Illrigger benefits from a good Charisma score.
If the chosen Combat Mastery or Contract uses Charisma heavily, it may become almost as important as the attack ability.
Seal important enemies
Baleful Interdict is most valuable on creatures the party expects to keep fighting for more than one trivial exchange.
A boss, dangerous controller, elite enemy, or mobile priority target is a better seal target than a creature expected to die before the seal can matter.
Because seals are limited and return on rests, placement should still be deliberate.
Burn versus expend
One of the most important Illrigger decisions is whether to burn a placed seal or expend a seal from the remaining pool.
Burning usually converts an existing mark into damage and can activate a Boon.
Expending can fuel effects that do not require a seal already placed on the target.
The class rewards preserving flexibility rather than automatically burning every seal immediately.
Use Invoke Hell at high impact
Each Diabolic Contract grants Invoke Hell options.
The feature refreshes after a short or long rest.
Use it when the Contract-specific effect materially changes the battlefield, not merely because it is available.
Use Infernal Conduit with health in mind
Infernal Conduit can heal or drain, but its transfer mechanics can put the Illrigger's own hit points at risk.
Check current health before using the support side aggressively.
The feature is strongest when shifting vitality keeps an important ally active or allows the Illrigger to recover from a dangerous target.
Common mistakes
Common Illrigger mistakes include:
- placing seals on enemies that die immediately;
- burning every seal before considering Boons;
- neglecting Charisma;
- choosing Combat Mastery without matching the weapon build;
- treating Infernal Conduit as free healing;
- forgetting that Contract features and base features share the same action economy;
- importing mechanics from an older Illrigger version.
A strong Illrigger treats every seal as a choice rather than a routine.
