Identity

The Thief is an agility and utility Rogue that expands Cunning Action into fast object and thieves' tool use, climbs efficiently, sneaks reliably and eventually ignores many magic-item restrictions. Its power comes from exploiting objects, terrain, movement, stealth, and eventually magic items, giving the Rogue more ways to interact with an encounter beyond direct damage.

How it fits the Rogue chassis

Thief begins at 3rd Rogue level and gains further archetype features at 9th, 13th, and 17th level. Thief gains archetype features at Rogue levels 3, 9, 13, and 17. Fast Hands and Second-Story Work establish the play style early, with later milestones improving stealth, magic-item access, and turn efficiency.

Ability-score implications

Dexterity is the dominant ability because it powers attacks, Armor Class, initiative, Stealth, Sleight of Hand and many thieves' tool checks. Constitution and Wisdom are common secondary choices.

Combat and exploration role

Use the environment. The Thief gains the most when there are doors, traps, locks, elevation, objects, equipment and terrain to exploit. Fast Hands can free the normal action for an attack while the bonus action handles a practical interaction that would normally consume an action.

Sneak Attack remains central

Thief does not add a new Sneak Attack condition. Its advantage comes from positioning and action economy: climbing, stealth and Fast Hands can help create a strong firing or melee position while leaving the action free for the qualifying Sneak Attack weapon attack.
