Pugilist FAQ
How do you play a Pugilist?
Play a Pugilist by keeping Strength and Constitution high, using Fisticuffs as your reliable baseline, and spending Moxie according to what the round needs. Brace Up improves durability, The Old One-Two increases offense, and Stick and Move improves mobility or control. Bloodied but Unbowed can restore momentum after heavy damage, while Haymaker is a deliberate accuracy-for-damage tradeoff rather than an automatic attack mode.
Playing a Pugilist well means embracing risk without wasting durability. The class wants to be close enough to brawl, but it still benefits from choosing when to spend Moxie and when to accept an accuracy penalty.
Build around Strength and Constitution
Strength normally powers attacks with unarmed strikes and pugilist weapons in this version.
Constitution improves hit points and can replace Dexterity for Armor Class through Iron Chin.
This makes the classic Pugilist straightforward to build: hit hard and be difficult to remove.
Use the free baseline before spending Moxie
Fisticuffs already provides a strong ordinary turn.
The Pugilist can attack with its scaling unarmed die and gain a bonus-action option under the feature's conditions.
Do not assume every turn must cost Moxie.
The resource is strongest when it creates a meaningful swing.
Brace Up when temporary hit points will actually be consumed
Brace Up spends Moxie to gain temporary hit points based on the Fisticuffs die, Pugilist level, and Constitution modifier.
Use it before incoming damage is likely.
Temporary hit points gained when the Pugilist is already safe may disappear without providing value.
Use The Old One-Two for pressure
The Old One-Two converts Moxie into additional unarmed strikes after taking the Attack action.
It is the obvious offensive option, but it competes with defensive and movement uses of Moxie.
Spend it when extra attacks can remove a target or create significant Fight Club synergy.
Use Stick and Move to control distance
Stick and Move lets the Pugilist spend 1 Moxie as a bonus action to make a shove attack or take the Dash action.
That makes Moxie useful even when damage is not the main problem.
Reaching an objective, pushing an enemy out of position, or escaping an area can be more valuable than one additional punch.
Exploit Bloodied but Unbowed without trying to trigger it recklessly
Bloodied but Unbowed is powerful because it returns Moxie and provides temporary hit points after the Pugilist becomes badly hurt.
Do not deliberately take unnecessary damage merely to activate it.
The feature is insurance and momentum recovery, not a requirement to stand in every attack.
Treat Haymaker as a probability decision
Haymaker trades accuracy for guaranteed maximum damage results under its rules.
If an attack is already difficult to land, the disadvantage may make the trade poor.
If the Pugilist has a strong attack bonus or another way to offset disadvantage, the guaranteed damage can become attractive.
Use it deliberately rather than on every turn after 5th level.
Dig Deep has a real cost
Dig Deep grants temporary resistance to common physical damage but causes exhaustion afterward in this Pugilist version.
That makes it a serious defensive mode rather than a free short-rest button.
Use it when the prevented damage is worth the future exhaustion penalty.
Use Fight Club mechanics actively
Arena Royale cares about persona and performance.
Bloodhound Bruisers rewards observation and urban investigation.
Dog & Hound adds a canine companion.
Piss & Vinegar specialises in provocation and dirty tricks.
The Squared Circle specialises in grappling.
The Sweet Science specialises in technical boxing and counters.
The Fight Club should alter how the character spends actions and Moxie.
Common mistakes
Common Pugilist mistakes include:
- treating Moxie as unlimited because it returns on a short rest;
- using The Old One-Two every turn without considering Brace Up or movement;
- forcing Bloodied but Unbowed by taking avoidable damage;
- using Haymaker when disadvantage makes a hit very unlikely;
- forgetting the exhaustion cost of Dig Deep;
- neglecting Constitution despite Iron Chin and durability features;
- mixing this d8 Moxie/Fight Club version with the later d10 Pugilist (2024).
A strong Pugilist looks reckless to the enemy while the player is actually managing risk carefully.
