The Messenger does not revolve around one single class resource. Instead, its identity comes from a collection of features that support four connected ideas: travel, versatility, communication, and mobility. The calling develops across ten levels. Early features establish the Messenger as an experienced traveller and envoy, while later levels improve its movement, general competence, precise weapon damage, and survivability. At 3rd level, the Messenger Path determines whether that foundation develops toward social support through the Counsellor or toward martial leadership through the Herald.

1st level: Folk-lore

Folk-lore represents the experience a Messenger gains by travelling between different peoples and settlements.

A Messenger is not simply someone who physically carries a message.

Their work requires understanding customs, stories, local expectations, and the people they meet along the road.

Folk-lore makes the Messenger exceptionally capable at recalling the customs, beliefs, and stories of the Free Peoples. On relevant Intelligence checks, the Messenger is treated as proficient in Old Lore and uses double proficiency for the check.

The feature is useful during exploration, social encounters, journeys, and adventures involving unfamiliar communities.

1st level: Tireless and Swift

Tireless and Swift establishes mobility and endurance as major parts of the Messenger identity.

Tireless and Swift increases the Messenger's speed while not wearing heavy armour and improves fatigue saving throws at the end of journeys. The movement bonus increases again at 6th and 10th level.

Its practical value extends beyond flavour.

Additional movement can allow a Messenger to reach a useful position without spending an entire turn closing distance, move between allies, reach cover, find a position from which Sneak Attack can be used effectively, carry information or assistance across a battlefield, or remain effective during journeys.

Positioning is one of the Messenger's mechanical strengths.

1st level: Unarmoured Defence

The Messenger's Unarmoured Defence uses:

10 + Dexterity modifier + Charisma modifier

while satisfying the feature's equipment restrictions.

Dexterity supports common weapon attacks, initiative, saving throws, and useful skills.

Charisma supports the Messenger's role as an envoy and social specialist while also contributing directly to defense.

Unarmoured Defence is an option provided by the class.

A Messenger does not have to use Unarmoured Defence when permitted armour gives a better result.

2nd level: Sneak Attack

The Messenger gains Sneak Attack at 2nd level.

Once per turn, Sneak Attack can add extra damage when the Messenger hits with a finesse or ranged weapon while having advantage. It can also qualify without advantage when another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it, that enemy is not incapacitated, and the Messenger does not have disadvantage. The extra damage increases as the Messenger gains levels.

Sneak Attack makes target selection and positioning important.

It rewards making one useful, accurate attack rather than treating the Messenger as a heavy front-line damage dealer.

Virtues and Crafts

Virtues and Crafts are part of the Messenger's progression within *The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying* system.

They provide customization beyond the fixed class features and allow different Messengers to develop different strengths.

Virtues and Crafts belong to *The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying* progression and are distinct from ordinary D&D feats.

Virtue and Craft choices follow the levels and restrictions in the Messenger progression.

3rd level: Errand Runner

Errand Runner broadens the Messenger's ability-check competence.

Errand Runner adds half the Messenger's proficiency bonus, rounded down, to any ability check that does not already include the proficiency bonus. It represents the broad practical competence gained from carrying messages and travelling between communities, and makes the Messenger unusually capable even when a check falls outside its trained specialties.

3rd level: Messenger Path

At 3rd level, the Messenger chooses a Messenger Path.

The published paths used here are:

  • Counsellor
  • Herald

Counsellor develops the Messenger toward advice, social interaction, councils, helping allies, and communication/support.

Herald develops the Messenger toward martial leadership. At 3rd level it adds medium-armour, shield, and martial-weapon proficiency, a Fighting Style, and a Charisma bonus to initiative; at 7th level it gains Extra Attack.

Both Paths retain the core Messenger identity.

A Herald does not stop being an envoy.

A Counsellor does not stop being mobile or capable in combat.

5th level: Uncanny Dodge

Uncanny Dodge allows the Messenger to use a reaction to reduce damage from a qualifying attack.

When an attacker the Messenger can see hits with an attack, the Messenger can use a reaction to halve that attack's damage.

The feature supports the Messenger's overall play style.

The class relies more on movement, positioning, and selective defensive tools than on the largest Hit Die or heaviest armor.

Because a reaction is limited, using Uncanny Dodge can also matter when another effect wants the same reaction.

How the features work together

The Messenger's features are strongest when treated as a system.

Tireless and Swift improves positioning.

Better positioning helps create useful Sneak Attack opportunities.

Dexterity supports those attacks and Unarmoured Defence.

Charisma supports interaction and also contributes to Unarmoured Defence.

Errand Runner broadens usefulness outside specialised skills.

Uncanny Dodge provides selective defense when positioning does not prevent an attack.

Virtues and Crafts customize the base calling.

Counsellor or Herald determines which side of the Messenger becomes the dominant specialization.

The Messenger is therefore a versatile travelling specialist rather than a class defined by one repeating combat button.
