A Druid is a nature-focused full spellcaster whose core identity combines prepared magic with Wild Shape. The class draws power from the natural world, primal forces, old traditions, spirits, animals, plants, weather, and the elements depending on setting and character concept. Mechanically, Druids are Wisdom-based prepared casters with a d8 Hit Die. They can fill very different party roles depending on spells and Druid Circle.

Core class profile

The 2014 Druid uses a d8 Hit Die.

Wisdom is the spellcasting ability.

Druid saving throw proficiencies are Intelligence and Wisdom.

The class has light and medium armor plus shield proficiency, with the 2014 class carrying the traditional restriction that Druids will not wear armor or use shields made of metal.

Druids also gain a distinctive selection of weapon proficiencies and proficiency with the herbalism kit.

Prepared full spellcasting

Druids are full spellcasters.

Their spell-slot progression reaches 9th-level spells.

Like Clerics, Druids prepare spells from the class spell list after a long rest.

Wisdom determines spellcasting effectiveness and contributes to the number of prepared spells under the 2014 rules.

This preparation system lets the Druid adapt to the expected adventure.

A Druid can prepare for:

  • exploration;
  • travel;
  • healing;
  • battlefield control;
  • elemental damage;
  • summoning;
  • environmental hazards;
  • information-gathering;
  • survival.

The class is therefore much broader than “the person who turns into animals.”

Druidic

At 1st level, Druids know Druidic, the secret language of Druids.

The feature has both communication and worldbuilding value.

It can allow Druids to leave hidden messages and recognise signs left by others who know the language under the feature's rules.

Its importance depends heavily on the campaign.

Wild Shape

At 2nd level, the Druid gains Wild Shape.

The base feature allows the Druid to transform into a beast the character has seen before, subject to Challenge Rating and movement restrictions that improve with Druid level.

The base class has two uses, regained after a short or long rest.

The transformation can support:

  • scouting;
  • infiltration;
  • travel;
  • climbing or swimming when allowed;
  • fitting through small spaces;
  • gaining a beast's movement or senses;
  • surviving through the beast form's hit points;
  • combat in builds designed around Wild Shape.

Wild Shape is useful even for a Druid who does not specialise in fighting as a beast.

Druid Circle

At 2nd level, the Druid chooses a Druid Circle.

The Circle is the subclass.

The 2014 class gains Circle features at 2nd, 6th, 10th, and 14th level.

Circle of the Land reinforces spellcasting and environmental identity.

Circle of the Moon dramatically improves combat Wild Shape.

Later official Circles add options based on dreams, shepherding spirits and summons, spores, stars, and wildfire.

The Circle can therefore change which half of the Druid's toolkit becomes dominant.

Exploration and utility

Druids are exceptionally good at interacting with wilderness and natural environments.

Their spells can solve problems involving:

  • food and water;
  • animals;
  • plants;
  • terrain;
  • weather;
  • movement;
  • tracking;
  • environmental hazards.

Wild Shape can add another layer by providing a small, fast, climbing, swimming, flying, or otherwise specialised form when the Druid's level permits it.

The class is therefore valuable in campaigns where reaching the objective is as important as winning the fight.

Combat role

A Druid's combat role depends on the Circle and prepared spells.

A caster-focused Druid may concentrate on a battlefield-control spell and stay away from direct attacks.

A Moon Druid may use Wild Shape as a major combat form.

A Stars Druid may build around Starry Form.

A Wildfire Druid uses its spirit for mobility and magical support.

A Shepherd Druid can strongly support summoned creatures and allies.

There is no single universal “Druid rotation.”

High-level transformation features

At high levels, the Druid becomes increasingly difficult to separate from nature.

Timeless Body slows the effects of aging.

Beast Spells allows spellcasting while in Wild Shape under the feature's restrictions.

At 20th level, Archdruid removes the normal limit on Wild Shape uses and greatly improves the Druid's ability to cast while transformed.

The class's two major systems—spellcasting and shapeshifting—therefore become more integrated as the Druid reaches its highest levels.

In short

A Druid is a Wisdom-based prepared full caster with Wild Shape and a strong exploration identity.

The class can be healer, controller, summoner, elemental caster, scout, or shapeshifting front-line character.

Its strength comes from preparing the right magic and using Wild Shape for more than only direct combat.
