The 2014 Bard combines full spellcasting with several features that improve allies, broaden skill use, and make the character increasingly adaptable. Unlike a class built around one repeated attack or one single resource, the Bard's power is spread across spells, Bardic Inspiration, skills, Expertise, and subclass features.

1st level: Spellcasting

Bards are Charisma-based full spellcasters.

They gain cantrips and spell slots beginning at 1st level and eventually gain access to 9th-level spell slots.

The 2014 Bard learns a limited number of Bard spells rather than preparing a completely new list each day.

This makes spell selection important.

A Bard should normally avoid learning several spells that all solve exactly the same problem unless that redundancy is intentional.

The Bard can also cast known Bard spells as rituals when the normal ritual-casting requirements are met.

A musical instrument can serve as a spellcasting focus for Bard spells.

1st level: Bardic Inspiration

Bardic Inspiration lets the Bard use a bonus action to grant another creature a Bardic Inspiration die.

The recipient can later add that die to a qualifying ability check, attack roll, or saving throw.

The die starts as a d6.

It becomes a d8 at 5th level, a d10 at 10th level, and a d12 at 15th level.

The Bard can use Bardic Inspiration a number of times equal to the Charisma modifier, with a minimum of one use.

Bardic Inspiration is valuable because it does not force the Bard to predict the exact roll that will need help.

The ally can hold the die until an appropriate moment.

2nd level: Jack of All Trades

Jack of All Trades adds half the Bard's proficiency bonus, rounded down, to ability checks that do not already include the Bard's proficiency bonus.

This makes the Bard unusually competent outside chosen proficiencies.

Because initiative is an ability check, Jack of All Trades also interacts with initiative under the 2014 rules.

The feature does not stack with a proficiency bonus that is already being added.

2nd level: Song of Rest

Song of Rest improves healing during a short rest.

When the Bard or friendly creatures who can hear the Bard regain hit points by spending Hit Dice at the end of the short rest, the feature provides additional healing.

The Song of Rest die improves at later Bard levels.

The feature is not a replacement for Hit Dice.

It improves a short-rest healing process that is already happening.

3rd and 10th level: Expertise

At 3rd level, the Bard chooses two proficient skills for Expertise.

The proficiency bonus is doubled for qualifying checks using those skills.

At 10th level, the Bard chooses two more.

Expertise allows the player to turn a broadly capable class into a true specialist in several selected areas.

3rd level: Bard College

The Bard College is the Bard's subclass.

The choice is made at 3rd level in the 2014 class structure.

College features are gained at 3rd, 6th, and 14th level.

The College can push the Bard toward knowledge, martial combat, social manipulation, weapon play, creation, supernatural storytelling, or another specialisation depending on source and campaign availability.

5th level: Font of Inspiration

Font of Inspiration changes how Bardic Inspiration recharges.

From 5th level, expended Bardic Inspiration uses return after a short or long rest rather than only after a long rest.

This is an important turning point for resource management.

The Bard can usually afford to use Inspiration more actively throughout the adventuring day.

6th level: Countercharm

Countercharm allows the Bard to use a performance to help nearby friendly creatures resist effects that cause the charmed or frightened conditions.

The feature uses the Bard's action and lasts only while its conditions are maintained.

This makes it situational.

When those conditions matter, however, it can provide useful protection to several allies at once.

Countercharm is not a universal dispel or immunity effect. While the performance lasts, the Bard and nearby friendly creatures gain advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed.

10th, 14th, and 18th level: Magical Secrets

Magical Secrets allows the Bard to learn spells from other class spell lists.

The chosen spell must satisfy the feature's level restrictions.

Those spells then count as Bard spells for the character.

The base Bard gains Magical Secrets at 10th, 14th, and 18th level.

This is one of the class's strongest customization tools.

It allows a Bard to acquire effects normally associated with another class and to patch weaknesses or reinforce a specific build.

College of Lore receives Additional Magical Secrets earlier as a subclass feature.

20th level: Superior Inspiration

Superior Inspiration is the 2014 Bard capstone.

When the Bard rolls initiative and has no Bardic Inspiration uses remaining, the feature restores one use.

The feature does not provide unlimited Bardic Inspiration.

It guarantees that a completely depleted Bard still enters combat with at least one use available.

How the features work together

Spellcasting supplies control, healing, support, utility, and magical problem-solving.

Bardic Inspiration improves important rolls.

Jack of All Trades creates broad competence.

Expertise creates deep specialisation.

Song of Rest improves short-rest recovery.

The Bard College shapes the character's specialist identity.

Font of Inspiration makes the core support resource easier to spend.

Magical Secrets expands spell selection beyond normal class boundaries.

The result is a class that becomes stronger by combining different kinds of contribution rather than repeating one dominant mechanic.
