Artificer FAQ
What ability scores are best for an Artificer?
Intelligence is normally the Artificer's highest ability score because it powers spellcasting, prepared spells, Flash of Genius, and many Specialist features. Constitution is usually the next priority for hit points and concentration, while Dexterity improves initiative and defense. The exact secondary priorities depend on the chosen Specialist.
The Artificer is one of the clearest Intelligence-focused classes in the pre-2024 rules. Intelligence affects so many class mechanics that most Artificers benefit from making it their highest score. After Intelligence, Constitution and Dexterity are the most common priorities, although the Specialist can change the exact order.
Intelligence
Intelligence is the Artificer's spellcasting ability.
It determines spell attack modifier, spell save DC, and the number of prepared Artificer spells.
At 7th level, Flash of Genius makes Intelligence even more important.
The feature adds the Artificer's Intelligence modifier to qualifying ability checks or saving throws and also ties its available uses to Intelligence.
Several Specialists also depend heavily on Intelligence.
For many Artificers, increasing Intelligence simultaneously improves offense, spellcasting, support, utility, and subclass mechanics.
That makes it the default first priority.
Constitution
Constitution increases hit points.
The Artificer uses a d8 Hit Die, so a good Constitution score improves the class's moderate baseline durability.
Constitution also helps maintain concentration.
This is especially relevant because many useful Artificer spells require concentration.
The class already has proficiency in Constitution saving throws, making a good Constitution score even more useful for maintaining important magical effects.
Dexterity
Dexterity improves initiative, Dexterity saving throws, several common skills, and Armor Class depending on equipment.
The pre-2024 Artificer is proficient with light armor, medium armor, and shields.
That means Dexterity is useful, but the character does not normally need to maximize it purely for Armor Class.
A Dexterity-based weapon build is possible.
However, several Specialists reduce the need to invest heavily in a separate physical attack score, making Intelligence even more efficient.
Strength
Strength is usually not a core Artificer ability.
It may matter for a particular weapon plan, Athletics, carrying capacity, or a specific character concept.
Most conventional Artificers can afford to prioritize it below Intelligence, Constitution, and Dexterity.
Wisdom and Charisma
Wisdom supports useful skills such as Perception and helps with Wisdom saving throws.
Charisma supports social skills.
Neither score powers the base Artificer's core mechanics.
Their value depends mainly on party role, campaign style, background, and character concept.
How the Specialist changes priorities
Alchemist is strongly Intelligence-focused because spellcasting and subclass effects are central to its role.
Armorer also strongly rewards Intelligence and can rely less heavily on a traditional Strength or Dexterity attack build.
Artillerist uses magical offense and therefore values Intelligence heavily.
Battle Smith likewise gains strong reasons to use Intelligence in combat.
The subclasses therefore tend to reinforce Intelligence rather than replacing it with another primary ability.
Practical priority
A conventional Artificer often follows:
Intelligence → Constitution → Dexterity → Wisdom / Charisma / Strength according to the character
For pre-2024 multiclassing, Intelligence 13 is the important Artificer prerequisite.
This is guidance rather than a mandatory array.
Armor, Specialist, feats, species, party composition, and campaign rules can all change the final distribution.
