Frequently asked questions about Acid Splash in D&D 5.5e.
FAQ
How many creatures can Acid Splash hit in D&D 5.5e?
Acid Splash has no fixed maximum number of creatures in D&D 5.5e. The 2024 version creates a 5-foot-radius Sphere at a point within 60 feet, and every creature inside that Sphere must make a Dexterity saving throw. The practical number of creatures affected therefore depends on positioning, creature size, the battle map, and which spaces are actually included in the area.

Does Acid Splash hit allies in D&D 5.5e?
Yes. The 2024 version of Acid Splash affects each creature inside its 5-foot-radius Sphere, not only enemies or creatures chosen by the caster. An ally inside the area must therefore make the same Dexterity saving throw as an enemy and takes the spell’s acid damage on a failed save. The caster must place the Sphere carefully or use another feature that can protect an ally.

Do you need to see where you cast Acid Splash in D&D 5.5e?
Not explicitly. The 2024 Acid Splash spell says that its acidic bubble appears at a point within range and does not say that the caster must see that point. However, this does not let the spell pass freely through walls or other Total Cover. The general 2024 area-of-effect rules state that if an unseen chosen point is blocked by an obstruction, the point of origin can come into being on the near side of that obstruction instead.

Can Acid Splash damage objects in D&D 5.5e?
Not by its normal written damage effect. The 2024 version of Acid Splash creates a 5-foot-radius Sphere at a point within range, but its damage rule applies to each creature in that Sphere. Objects are not included in that damage instruction. Choosing a point on or near an object therefore does not automatically make the object take Acid Splash damage, although a DM can still allow situational environmental effects as an adjudication.

Can Sculpt Spells protect creatures from Acid Splash in D&D 5.5e?
Yes, when Acid Splash is cast as a Wizard Evocation and the 2024 Evoker’s Sculpt Spells feature applies. Acid Splash is an Evocation cantrip, so its spell level is 0. Sculpt Spells lets the Wizard choose a number of visible affected creatures equal to 1 plus the spell’s level, which means one creature for Acid Splash. That creature automatically succeeds on the Dexterity saving throw and therefore takes no Acid Splash damage.
